The Baseball Hall of Fame welcomed its newest prospective members Sunday, with the Todays Game Committee voting in former MLB commi sioner Bud Selig and longtime Atlanta Braves executive John Schuerholz.None of the other eight candidates on the ballot got more than seven votes, not that anyone Luis Severino Jersey should have expected a stampede of inductions.MORE: Since 2002, whats casually known as the Veterans Committee has met on an irregular basis, never voting on the same era of players in consecutive years. During this time, the committee has enshrined just three players: Joe Gordon in 2009, Ron Santo in 2012and Deacon White in 2013.By contrast, between 1960 and 2001, when the committee met every year, it enshrined 77 players, or nearly two per year on average. The continual, various restrictions on veterans voting for the Hall of Fame over the past 14 years have probably had at least a few good effects. During stretches when the committee was most unfettered in the 1960s and 70s, it put in many of its most notoriously bad selections, from Lloyd Waner to Rube Marquard to High Pockets Kelly, to name a few.Oversight was clearly lacking for the committee in these years. Some reform was almost certainly needed. But the Hall of Fame might have gone too far in the other direction in recent years. So long as the restrictions remain in place, far more deserving candidates might be kept out than unqualified ones let in Cooperstown.Take Dick Allen, the Philadelphia Phillies slugger who came within one vote of enshrinement in the 2015 election. Under the latest setup the Hall of Fame adopted in July, a signing candidates to one of four committees based on era, Allen might only be considered once every five years.MORE: Same goes for Tony Oliva, Minnie Minosoand Gil Hodges, among others, who could be judged to have made their greatest contribution to baseball between 1950 and 1969 and therefore be relegated for consideration to the so-called Golden Days Committee. This committee meets just once every five years, with its first meeting set for the 2021 induction. There will be just 10 candidates on its ballot, with a number of slots reserved for managers, umpiresand executives. If present rules remain, voters will be restricted to voting for a maximum Gary Sanchez Jersey of four candidates. In other words, Allen could face heavy competition if hes eligible in 2021, with his next shot another five years out if he falls short. Theres talk of having him be eligible with a Modern Era Committee, which covers candidates who made their greatest contribution between 1970 and 1987, but this wouldnt make his odds a whole lot better. Frankly, they could get worse.SPAEDER: Instead of meeting once every five years, the Modern Era Committee meets twice, switching off with the Todays Game Committee that met Sunday and covers 1988 to present.Because of the years it covers, the ballot for the Modern Era Committee could be pretty packed next year. Its Aaron Judge Jersey early, but heres one po sible ballot, a suming the Hall keeps it to 10 candidates and continues its trend of only having it be half-filled with players:Allen, a suming hes eligible for these years;Major League Baseball Players A sociation Executive Director Marvin Miller;New York Yankees manager Billy Martin;Pittsburgh Pirates manager Danny Murtaugh;Cincinnati Reds executive Bob Howsam;Kansas City Royals owner Ewing Kauffman;Two-time National League Most Valuable Player Dale Murphy;Longtime Detroit Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell;Tigers workhorse and 1991 World Series heroJack Morris;Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Steve Garvey.Theres no room for many qualified Aroldis Chapman Jersey candidates, particularly ones whose cases are strongest with sabermetrics: Bobby Grich, Dwight Evans, Ted Simmons, Rick Reuschel, and Lou Whitaker, to name five who come quickly to mind. The current setup would also seemingly exclude fan favorites such as Tommy John, Thurman Munsonand Keith Hernandez, among others.Theres just very little breathing room in eras for which lots of veteranscandidates remain to be considered. Of course, that wasnt nece sarily the case with the recent Todays Game Committee ballot, which featured Selig, Schuerholz, Lou Piniella, Davey Johnson, George Steinbrenner, Harold Baines, Albert Belle, Will Clark, Orel Hershiserand Mark McGwire. Arbitrarily drawing the line between certain years creates inequities. The candidates who face the slimmest odds, by the way, under the current veterans voting setup for the Hall of Fame belong to the Early Days Committee, which considers candidates from before 1949 and meets once every 10 years. The best thing the Hall did in setting up this committee was re-open the door for Negro League candidates. But Buck ONeil fans still face a long fight to get him in Cooperstown when the committee meets at the same time as the Golden Days Committee in 2021.MORE: If all of this sounds convoluted, it is. Bottom line, the setup is another way to keep players from being considered every year, for the simple reason that the Hall of Fame appears to want some veterans candidates getting in, but not many. The Hall of Fame can change this. It could resume having its committees vote on all candidates every year. It could expand the ballot beyond 10 candidates and not limit the number of candidates voters can choose. The Hall of Fame could expand the electorate dramatically beyond a 16-member committee. All of these things and more are within the Hall of Fames power. Its a non-profit that isnt beholden to shareholders or Major League Baseball, after all. It can do as it pleases. The reality, though, is that the Hall of Fame seems to want tomaintain the exclusivity of enshrinement as much as po sible. If this creates situations where candidates such Sonny Gray Jersey as Dick Allen are collateral damage while Bud Selig is one of two inductees, the Hall of Fame seems to say,"So be it."
