Not many good baseball things happenedin Atlanta during the '80s. And, sometimes, even when it was good, it was bad.One such example happened , whenBraves slugger Bob Horner clubbed a record-tying four home runs in an 11-8 home lo s to the Expos. Horner was the 11th player in history to accomplish the four-homer feat, but hes still the only player in the modern era to touch em all four times in one game and still have his team come Jaelan Phillips Jersey up short.ModernBraves fans would call that Barving.MORE: The lo s made it a bittersweet day for Horner and the Braves, who were in the middle of a stretch in which they lost 11 of 12 and were on their way to an 89-lo s season. But Braves fans at Fulton County stadium that day certainly appreciated Horners accomplishment, though most fans who werent at the game didnt know anything about it until long after the Robert Jones Jersey game ended.Thats because TBS, which broadcast the vast majority of Braves games in those days, was carrying the 1986 Goodwill Games that Sunday afternoon and didnt even show the Braves game live; it aired on tape delay later in the day. That also seems a little Barve-y.Anyway, back to Horner His first three homers that day were off Expos righty Andy McGaffigan, who had an odd stat line: He surrendered the three homers to Horner despite pitching just 4 2/3 innings (he also got a hit and an RBI for Montreal).Horners first chance to hit a fourth homer came in the bottom of the seventh, but he popped out to first. He came to bat one last time in the bottom of the ninth against Expos closer Jeff Reardon with the Braves down 11-7. On Reardons first pitch, Horner connected on a deep drive to left center that cleared the wall by plenty and put him in the record book.MORE: The game ended one batter later when Ken Griffey flew out to right field Emmanuel Ogbah Jersey .Side note: Had Horners teammates gotten on base more that day, they might not have lost. The three hitters ahead of him in the lineup were a collective 5 for 15 (mostly thanks to Ken Oberkfells 4 Lynn Bowden Jr. Jersey -for-5 performance), but Dale Murphy, who hit right before Horner, went 0 for 5 and grounded into two double plays which is why three of Horners homers were solo shots. Tough day, Murph. The four-homer day was e sentially Horners last hurrah in a that began just 10 days after he was drafted No. 1 in the nation in the 1978 MLB Draft. Having jumped straight to the majors from Arizona State (without a single game in the minors), Horner won the NL Rookie of the Year Award despite getting just 359 plate appearances. It helped that he hit 23 homers.Power was Horners MO. And boy did he show it off in the early years: He followed his 23 rookie homers with Teddy Bridgewater Jersey 33 homers in 1979 and 35 more in 1980.MORE: In all, he had seven seasons with 20 or more homers, and three in which he hit more than 30, accumulating a career WAR of 21.7. But his career was also one of wondering what could have been, as Horners promise on the field was often cut short by injury. Only once did he play in more than 140 games and three times he played in fewer than 80 games. After finishing 1986 with 27 homers, Horner opted to play the 1987 season in Japan after being unable to land a free-agent contract to his liking in the majors. He returned to the big leagues in 1988 with the Cardinals, but played in just 60 games. He played his final game on June 18 that year and retired at age 30 with 218 home runs and a career OPS of .839.When he was healthy, Horner was a powerful presence in Atlantas lineup, a game Miami Dolphins Accessories -changing bat that put fear in the hearts of National League pitchers. And on one July day in 1986, he showed why.
